International Travel
At Spruce Creek High School we believe that learning does not stop when the bell rings. Students are encouraged to take part in any opportunity that helps them become a better student and citizen of the world. One such opportunity is international travel with fellow students. We have a number of teachers who work independently with various educational tour groups to organize travel opportunities for students. MOST OF THESE INTERNATIONAL TRIPS ARE INDEPENDENTLY ORGANIZED WITH OUTSIDE EDUCATIONAL AGENCIES BY TEACHERS AND ARE NOT AFFILIATED WITH OR ENDORSED BY VOLUSIA COUNTY SCHOOLS OR SPRUCE CREEK HIGH SCHOOL. Please reach out to individual teachers with questions and to find out more.
PERFORM INTERNATIONALLY!
Mrs. & Mr. Martin organize international trips for the High Steppin' Hawk Band and Orchestra to gain experience performing around the world. For more information and to see if there is currently a trip planned, visit https://www.creekband.org/. Their next trip is scheduled for the Wind Band to participate in the National Concert Festival in Indianapolis in March 2024! They will be traveling internationally to perform during the winter of 2025- details will be announced soon!
SEE THE WORLD BEYOND YOUR TEXTBOOKS!
Europe (The Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, France, and England) June 2025!
Ms. Shon Duncan, IB & AP history teacher, works with Mrs. Samantha Murray, our media specialist, IB Extended Essay Coordinator and former English teacher, to take academically minded students on annual summer tours. Between the two of them, they have led trips for over a decade that focus on history, art, culture, and leadership opportunities. They have traveled with students to France, Scotland, Italy, Spain, Greece, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Austria, England, Switzerland, Iceland, and Japan. These trips are not school or district sponsored, but are awesome opportunities for any academically motivated students who want to work with a team of students from around the world on a global issue. Because they are independent trips, all students are invited to attend, including students from other public, private, or charter schools in Volusia County or the surrounding areas if they apply and meet academic requirements. Because space is limited, SCHS students will be given the first chance at enrollment. Any student is welcome to reach out for more information. They will be traveling to The Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, France, and England in June of 2025! You can visit www.aWorldBeyondBooks.weebly.com to find out more.
PRACTICE YOUR LANGUAGE SKILLS INTERNATIONALLY!
Switzerland, Italy and France June 2025!
Ms. Biruta Strauts, our German teacher, organizes international trips for language students to Europe to increase their exposure to their languages of study. Ms. Strauts was an exchange student through a program with EF as a teen and has lived all over the world. She wants to further students understanding of language by helping them utilize what they have learned in the real world. Her trips are through EF tours and are not school or school district approved or affiliated. Her 2024 trip will visit Spain, France, Switzerland & Germany and in 2025 she will be taking a group to Switzerland, Italy, and France! For more information about any upcoming trips, please contact her at bstrauts@volusia.k12.fl.us. Students are also encouraged to speak with any world language teacher about opportunities because many of them will offer trips periodically or partner with Ms. Strauts.
Peru June 2025!
Ms. Maria Mantilla, one of our Spanish teachers, is now organizing international trips to Spanish speaking countries to help students immerse themselves in their language study! She will be taking a group to Peru in the summer of 2025. Peru is an awe-inspiring country, with some of the most unique geographical landmarks around the world. This land has been home to some of the world’s most ancient civilizations. You’ll retrace the roots of the Inca Empire in Cuzco and at Machu Picchu, a destination like no other on Earth, while also exploring the Spanish Empire’s reign in Lima. The Peruvian culture of today is no less compelling—get a glimpse at one of its colorful markets and by talking to native communities. Please reach out to Ms. Mantilla at mpmantil@volusia.k12.fl.us for more information.
HELP THE WORLD!
Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands June 2025!
Mr. Josh Platt teaches AP and IB Environmental Studies, so he focuses trips on environmental conservation and service learning, mostly in South America. His trips are through EF tours and are not school or school district approved or affiliated. Last summer 26 students joined him for the trip of a lifetime to do conservation work and experience the biodiversity of Costa Rica. During the summer of 2025 he is headed to the Galapagos and the Amazon. This will be an epic experience for your students if they are interested in seeing some of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world, interacting with indigenous people in these regions and experiencing an amazing journey to some of the most famous natural places on this planet. They will head to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands in June of 2025. You can email him for more information about this trip or future opportunities at jpplatt@volusia.k12.fl.us.
GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE!
We have had other teachers who have offered different opportunities in the past. We will update this page with more information as it becomes available. Know that some of these opportunities are school board approved, but most are arranged independently using a variety of experienced travel organizations that focus on educational trips for students. As outlined above, Volusia County Schools and Spruce Creek High School are not affiliated with these international travel opportunities and we do not endorse any particular experience offered by these companies. Speak with the teachers to find out more. Happy traveling!
