National French Honor Society

The Société Honoraire de Français (SHF) is the primary National French Honor Society for high school students, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF) to recognize academic excellence in French. It fosters interest in Francophone culture, offering members benefits like honor cords and scholarship opportunities.

  • Activities: Chapters engage in cultural activities, tutoring, and community service.
  • Benefits: Inclusion of the official seal on graduation diplomas, eligibility for travel grants, and the ability to wear special regalia (tri-color cords or stoles).
  • Motto: "Celui qui sait deux langues en vaut deux" ("The one who knows two languages is worth two men"). 
  • Purpose: To stimulate interest in French, recognize high standards of scholarship, and promote understanding of Francophone cultures.
  • Eligibility: Generally requires at least three semesters of French, maintaining an A- or better in language studies, and a 3.0 or higher GPA in other coursework.
