Discipline
When a student violates the Volusia County Schools Student Code of Conduct, he or she will receive a referral to the discipline office. That referral will be processed by one of the administrators in discipline and parents or guardians will be contacted. In many cases, the consequence is outlined in the code of conduct. Here are some potential outcomes:
DETENTION
LUNCH DETENTION – TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS. Report to designated room on time. Bring schoolwork, homework, reading material, paper and pencil. There will be no talking, eating, drinking, or cell phone use. Sleeping will not be allowed.
IN-SCHOOL SUSPENSION
Report to ISS Room at the start of first period. Bring books, paper, and pencil. There will be no talking, eating or drinking. Sleeping will not be allowed. Failure to attend and follow rules of In School Suspension (ISS) could result in assignment of additional day or out of school suspension. NOTE: DUE TO DISTRICT-WIDE PROGRAM CHANGES, SOME ON-SITE DISCIPLINARY OPTIONS MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE. IN THAT EVENT, OTHER DISCIPLINARY OPTIONS WILL APPLY.
OUT OF SCHOOL SUSPENSION
You may not attend any school activities or visit any district school while on suspension. Trespassing charges may be filed. Upon return from suspension, students see each teacher regarding assignments and make up work. Students returning from out of school suspension must get an “admit to class” pass from the Dean’s Office.
NOTE: FAILURE TO ATTEND DETENTION OR ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION MAY ALSO RESULT IN THE LOSS OF PRIVILEGE TO ATTEND THE HOMECOMING DANCE, PROM, GRAD NITE, LEAVE CAMPUS FOR LUNCH, PARK ON CAMPUS, OR PARTICIPATE IN OTHER EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES.
Clinic
Clinic Procedures
Due to Florida Statue 1014.06 (Parents Bill of Rights - Parental Consent for Health Care Services); Parents must now provide affirmative consent for schools to provide health care services to minor students. This means that a service we routinely provided in the past such as rendering ice packs, band aids, or taking a student’s temperature can no longer take place on the school campus without parental consent on file. The district will require parent/guardian consent to allow for the services traditionally provided by school clinic assistants, including care and treatment for general health services which may include but is not limited to band aids, ice packs, wound coverings, anti-itch cream such as calamine lotion, etc.
If the school does not have consent on file, parents will be notified each time their child comes to the clinic requiring care with the expectation that they pick up their child if he/she appears sick, unwell, or needs first aid care.
Please keep in mind the school staff still reserves the right to call 911 and provide emergency care in the event of a serious accident, injury, or illness regardless of if we have parent/guardian consent on file per School Board Policy.
Please be aware that additional consent and/or doctor’s orders are still required for medication administration and medical procedures.
All students must have an Emergency Card with contacts and phone numbers on file in the clinic. In the event of an emergency, parent contact is made with the information on the emergency card. Emergencies happen more often than you think. Without the emergency card and medical consent on file valuable medical care could be delayed.
An ill student must receive a pass from their teacher to go to the clinic during class time or in between classes. A pass is not needed during the lunch period. Because the Nurse is available during the student’s lunch, the clinic is closed during 5th period for the Nurse to take her lunch. Any student who is feeling ill during lunch should not wait until the end of lunch to go to the clinic. Only emergencies will be dealt with in the Dean’s office during 5th period. All others must wait until the Nurse returns at the end of 5th period.
Emergencies and bleeding wounds will be given priority treatment; otherwise students will be seen in the order that they enter the clinic.
The nurse will make contact with the parent and appropriate arrangements will be made to release the student or send back to class. If it is decided that the student will be sent home, the parent or guardian must come into the main office to sign the student out. Students who drive to school will be released through the nurse’s office after it is determined that the student must be sent home provided the student is well enough to drive.
Medication such as pain relievers, cold medication, antacid, aspirin (over the counter drugs) will not be given to students without a prescription from the doctor and completed paperwork is on file. Prescription medication as well as over the counter must be brought into the clinic by a parent. Students may not carry any medication on their person. All medication is stored in the clinic and dispensed only by the nurse or designee. The only exception to this is a doctor’s statement completed student administered medical form.
Students will be allowed 15 minutes in the clinic, during which time parent contact will be attempted. Students must return to class if the school is unable to contact the parent or if it is determined that the student will not be leaving campus.
Please view the Student Health services website to access the new medication forms and or procedure forms. Medication forms, procedure forms, and emergency care plans must be renewed by the parent, at or before the beginning of each school year in order for your child to receive medication or procedures during school hours on a school campus. Students carrying their own epipen, inhaler or diabetic supplies, are also required to have medication forms on file with their zoned school. Below are a few helpful links.

Administration of Medication
Only the principal, school nurse, or trained staff shall administer prescription medication to the student or assist the student in the administration of such medication on a school campus. Prior to the administration or self-administration of medication, including over the counter medications, parents/legal guardians must complete the designated forms. At no time may a student bring any medication to the school. Medication must be transported to school by a parent or legal guardian.
AdventHealth eCare is Now Available for VCS Families
Using AdventHealth eCare, students and their parents will experience a face-to-face video visit with a board-certified physician or nurse practitioner for a range of urgent care issues, such as pink eye, coughs/colds/flu, minor injuries, allergies, urinary tract infections, and more.
During this virtual visit, students can receive a diagnosis for minor ailments, learn about treatment options, receive follow-up instructions and obtain a prescription if needed – all without leaving the comfort of your own home.
Reporting an Absence
Check Out Procedures
When a student needs to check out of school before the scheduled dismissal time the parent should send in a signed note with the following information:
- Student’s name and alpha code
- Reason for dismissal
- Time student is to be released
- Parent signature
- Phone number where parent can be reached to verify early dismissal.
Students need to drop the note off in F-12 before school. All notes will be called for confirmation. After confirmation with the parent a checkout pass will be delivered to the student (if it is not delivered before you are to leave, make sure to come to F-12 to pick it up) and at the dismissal time, the student will show the pass to the teacher and may leave the building. The student hands the checkout pass to the Campus Advisor at the gate when leaving the property.
When the check out is not planned in advance and the parent or guardian is coming on campus to pick up the student, please follow this process.
To check a student out of class please follow these steps:
- Show your ID at the guard shack when you enter campus.
- Park in the visitor parking spaces at the front of the school.
- Stay in your vehicle and call the main office (386-322-6272 then press 0) if needed OR come inside the main office.
- Give the name, alpha code and grade of the student you are picking up.
- Wait for verification. Only adults on the student’s emergency card are permitted to check out the student.
- Once confirmed, the student will be sent to your vehicle with a check out pass. Depending on the time of day and the location of your student’s classroom this procedure can take up to 30 minutes so please plan accordingly. You can text your student to let them know you are waiting.
- Exit the campus and present check out pass to the Campus Advisor at the guard house
Checkout passes will not be given to underclassmen to leave at lunch time. A parent must come in to sign the student out. This rule applies regardless of the reason for the checkout.
In the case of illness, the student should get a pass from their teacher and go to the clinic if possible. The clinic has its own procedure for checking students out. The nurse will call you and arrangements will be made to release the student.
If the student returns to campus after an appointment, they must check back in through the main office. The parent or guardian does not need to come in to check them back in.
Check out for Early Dismissal ends 30 minutes before the end of the school day. Students will not be called from class after this time.
There will be no early dismissal during exams unless there is a medical emergency or a parent/guardian is present for student check-out.
Leaving School Grounds
No student is permitted to leave the school grounds during class hours unless he/she receives permission from an appropriate school official to check out. Students must have an early dismissal pass with them when leaving campus. Students must enter and exit the campus through authorized entry and exit gates. At no time are students to enter or exit the campus by jumping over fences. The areas on the outside of the campus perimeter are private property. Trespassing on private property could result in legal action.
Any student who leaves campus without parent permission or an early dismissal pass is considered truant from school. This includes seniors who do not return to school after lunch.
Failure to follow the correct procedure will result in disciplinary action.
Partial Day Students
If you do not have 7 periods on campus, you can't be on campus during the free periods (where you are registered for dual enrollment, online classes, or senior short day) without specific permission from administration for a particular event that day. For safety reasons, if you do not have transportation to leave campus each day, you must have a full schedule so that there is an adult on campus who is responsible for you. Your ID must reflect your shortened schedule to be able to leave campus. Please visit the activities office or media center for a new ID. If you are a student who comes for activities only after school, you still need an ID that reflects your schedule.
Dropping Things Off At School
No Drop-Offs of Items at the Front Office
Parents and Students: To further increase safety and well being for our students and staff on our campus, the administration will no longer allow items to be dropped off for students in the front office during school hours. This includes, but is not limited to: lunches, money, projects, textbooks, homework, musical instruments, clothing, athletic apparel, sports equipment. etc. While we do understand this may prove to be inconvenient to you and your student, please understand that the security and safety of all our students and staff is our number one concern. Please review with your student what is needed each day for school in order to stop the need for dropping off materials. We appreciate your understanding and full cooperation.
Students are also not allowed to order Door Dash, Uber Eats, or any other delivery during school hours for delivery to the main office.
Emergency and Safety Guide
In the event that safety and physical needs of students at Spruce Creek High School cannot be met on campus due to weather, lack of sanitation, water, or a continued threat to the campus, procedures are in place to evacuate to Creekside Middle School or Spruce Creek Elementary School.
Spruce Creek High School has a written agreement with these locations to provide temporary shelter. The district would provide any needed transportation as soon as drivers can be dispatched. Teachers will ensure that students remain together as a class at the time of evacuation. Early release procedures will be implemented. Should conditions permit, students who have their own transportation at Spruce Creek High School will be returned to the student parking lot via school bus once the parents/guardians have given their approval. Students not receiving release approval will remain at the evacuation location under teacher supervision until transported home at the end of the regular school day.
Important Addresses:
- Creekside Middle School: 6801 Airport Rd, Port Orange
- Spruce Creek Elementary School: 642 Taylor Rd, Port Orange
Parents Have a Key Role in Emergency Response
During and following an emergency situation, school and district officials must act quickly and follow established emergency protocols to safeguard students and staff, secure schools, and communicate accurate information in a timely manner. Parents can assist greatly by helping with preparation before the emergency. Follow this link for critical steps parents can take: School Emergency Guide for Parents
