The mission of the Volusia County Schools’ school counselors is to implement a proactive school counseling program that fosters academic achievement, career awareness, personal growth and a positive self-image for all students within a safe and secure learning environment.
Who is My Counselor?
Student counselors are assigned by your last name UNLESS you are in a specialized program. If you are in a specialized program, please go to that tab.
When reaching out to your counselor, email is preferred for all general requests. Please be detailed in your email so they can help you. For example, if you are requesting a schedule change, make sure to put exactly what you would like changed, why, what it should be changed to, your alpha code, and how they should contact you about the change.
If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, you are always able to come straight to the office.
AP students are assigned to their counselor by last name or other special program. That is who you should contact for most things. For general AP questions, you can reach out to our AP Coordinator.
If you graduated more than three years ago, please follow the instructions here.
For current students and those who graduated within 3 years, please fill out this form SCHS Transcript Request. If you have questions about your transcript request after you have submitted it, please reach out to the registrar Ms. Mary Miller at mamille1@volusia.k12.fl.us or call the front desk at 386-322-6272.
More information can be found on the Future Hawks page.
If your child is an incoming 9th grade student who is currently attending a VCS middle school and is zoned for Spruce Creek High School, they will automatically role up to us.
If your child is an incoming 9th grade student who is interested in an academy or IB at Spruce Creek, please make sure to follow the process to apply for that program. The process can be found here.
If you are a current student at another VCS high school and are looking to transfer in-district, please complete this form and make an appointment with our registrar.
Parents access gradebook and all digital forms through Parent Portal. The directions for creating a Parent Portal account can be found on the Volusia County Schools website HERE.
The first step whenever a student is struggling is reaching out and contacting the teacher. You can find any teacher's email in Gradebook or on the school website by clicking here. When emailing the teacher, ask when they are available for tutoring, what's the teacher's retake policy, and what your child needs to do to improve their grade. Encourage your student to attend office hours, which take place at the beginning of lunch each day except Wednesdays. If your student continues to struggle, then contact your student's counselor to schedule a teacher conference. For more information about tutoring, please visit www.sprucecreekhigh.com/parents-students/tutoring.
Ensuring that our students have access to every opportunity is a priority for our district. While all students are automatically eligible for free breakfast and lunch in VCS, you will want to fill out an income based services request with the district to qualify for the following:
Free student laptop insurance
Vouchers for free SAT/ACT
Vouchers for some free college applications
Consideration for various income based services
The purpose of the Income Based Services Request is to determine eligibility for income based programs and benefits. If your family wishes to be considered for services that are based on income, please complete the form on the district website. If you have a direct certification letter that was mailed to your home, you do not need to complete the form. The letter can serve as income verification. Reach out to your counselor to see if the information is already on file. This information will be considered confidential and will only be used to determine program eligibility.
Please fill out this form and return it to the main office at Spruce Creek High School to ensure the school counselors have access to your information and can better assist your student with connecting to resources.
Both VOL and FLVS offer a variety of online flex options to complement your schedule. Students will use these options to free up class periods for other electives (like additional arts or CTE classes), to make up credits when they were not successful in a class, to accelerate their learning with classes we may not offer on campus, or to allow more flexibility with their on campus schedule by shortening their day. We do not recommend online classes for students who are not self motivated, organized, and able to stay focused on their goals. VOL classes are taught by teachers in Volusia County. This option allows your school counselor to continue to assist you with anything you need related to the class and facilitate communication with the teacher. FLVS is a completely different school district, so your counselor can't help you with anything related to FLVS. You will need to reach out to the FLVS support team. Classes from both programs will appear on student transcripts and in their GPA.
The SAT, ACT and CLT are all tests used for college admissions. They are also used to earn a concordant score if needed for state test graduation requirements. To learn more about state tests and their concordant requirements, please visit www.fldoe.org/accountability/assessments/k-12-student-assessment. VCS pays for all students to take the SAT once in the spring of their junior year and once in the fall of their senior year during the school day. For all other administrations of the SAT, ACT, or CLT you must visit their websites to register and pay for the test. If you qualify for income based services, you can reach out to your counselor to receive a fee waiver. Spruce Creek High School's code is 101437 for both the SAT and the ACT.
For high school students, volunteer work of any kind is a laudable pursuit, possessing more than enough intrinsic value to make it worth your time. Yet, dedicating your time to charitable endeavor can also help you to gain real-world experience in an area of academic and/or career interest. No matter your passion, there is likely a perfect volunteering opportunity out there for you—there’s just that tiny matter of finding it. Listen to the announcements and watch social media for different opportunities. Join a club or sport on campus and there will be plenty of opportunities to volunteer. Talk to your family and family friends to see if there are any opportunities where they work or with organizations that they participate in. Reach out to different community organizations. Follow those organizations on social media. Groups are always looking for help. Make it a family affair and participate with parents or siblings! The spirit of generosity for our community will pull you together.
It is important to know that there is no requirement for volunteer hours to earn a high school diploma in Florida. The requirement is if you are trying to earn a Florida Bright Futures Scholarship or if you want to gain experience to include on college applications. To qualify for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship, the requirements have branched out to include paid work hours, not just volunteer hours. You need to document those hours with the school so that they appear on your transcript for them to qualify for Bright Futures. Follow these links for more information:
Our counseling office secretary will collect your documentation at any point. Please bring your completed forms to the front desk of the counseling office. The agreement form must be completed for EACH organization you volunteer prior to any service hours. It is suggested all hours be turned in each semester but MUST be turned in by the end of the school year. Once recorded by the school, hours will accumulate from year to year and will be documented on the students transcript. If you volunteer for one organization regularly, we suggest turning in forms several times a year. The new year starts June 1st.
