Paying for College

When planning to further your education beyond Spruce Creek, one of the things you should be considering is the cost of furthering your education. You can save a lot of money by taking advanced classes through IB, AP, and Dual Enrollment (visit those pages for specifics), but beyond that, how will you pay for the balance? Here are the average costs for one year of education at various colleges:
- Daytona State College (Living at Home): $3,100-$3,500 per year
- UCF (Living at Home): $6,500- $7,000 per year
- UCF/UF/FSU/USF/etc. (Living on Campus): $25,000 per year
- ERAU (Living at Home): $46,000 per year
- ERAU (Living on Campus): $72,000 per year
- Bethune Cookman (Living at Home): $16,000 per year
- Bethune Cookman (Living on Campus): $30,000 per year
Even if FSU is not on your list of colleges, they have a very comprehensive budget worksheet that can help you see what you will need to pay for. Check the website for colleges you are interested in for similar information. Going to college is not just about the tuition. You need to consider the following expenses: Tuition, Fees, Housing, Food, Books, Materials, Course Supplies, Equipment, Other Expenses (Clothes, Travel, Entertainment, etc.)
You can pay for college with a combination of the following:
- Scholarships: This is money you apply for that you do NOT have to pay back. There are national, state, and local scholarships and each college will have some scholarships that they offer admitted students. The resources listed below will point you toward some scholarships.
- Grants: These are provided by the government or school, typically for those with demonstrated financial need, and do NOT have to be paid back. The most typical grant is the Pell Grant.
- Loans: This is money loaned to you by the government or a private loan company. It DOES have to be paid back with interest. You should limit the amount you take out in loans to the least amount possible. It can be very difficult to pay back student loans when you graduate from college if you have a large loan balance and can delay the ability to buy a house, car, etc. Visit the Federal Loan Website for more information.
- Work Study: Colleges will sometimes offer jobs on campus to help pay for your tuition.
- Independent Job: Most students work while attending college to pay for expenses.
- Savings and/or Florida Prepaid: While it is not affordable for all families, your family may have purchased a Florida prepaid tuition plan or saved some money for you to attend college. If they were able to do this for you, be sure to thank them!
Unless you have cash to pay for all of your expenses, your first step will always be completing the FASFA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). This must be completed annually to apply for federal, state, and institutional financial aid, including grants, work-study, and loans.
FASFA
Any student, regardless of income, who wants to be considered for federal, state, and school financial aid programs must complete the FASFA. This includes grants, scholarships, work-study funds, and loans. You can't be awarded any financial aid from colleges or universities without filling out the FASFA. It opens in October each year for the following year and should be filled out by the time you apply for college so that they can send you financial aide offers with your acceptance. If you are not a US citizen, you are ineligible for federal financial aid, but you can still qualify for in-state tuition and private loans. Please reach out to your college or university to find out what options are available.

Florida Bright Futures
The Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program establishes lottery-funded scholarships to reward Florida high school graduates for high academic achievement. It covers up to 100% of your tuition for up to 120 hours toward a bachelors degree. You must apply for the scholarship your senior year of high school. It opens in October and should be filled out before you graduate so that you have assistance from your counselor if needed. Even if you do not plan to stay in Florida or you think you won't be enrolling in a college, fill it out! If you don't fill it out and change your mind after graduation, it will be too late.
